Name: Matthew Miller (ミラー・マシュー)

Matthew Miller is an American educator who has been teaching foreign languages since 1992 and living in Japan for twenty years. He is especially interested in language learning and his research has focused on vocabulary acquisition, the use of authentic materials as well as teaching content-based language lessons. He would now like to share the knowledge gained from his education, research and experience to help instructors and students in Japan.

Qualifications

Master’s degree completed with Merit in Linguistics (TESOL) from Surrey University (UK)
Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Westminster College (US)

Experience

Visiting Associate Professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies for seven years (teaching an Education course and giving TOEFL lectures)
Teaching content-based courses in English at several other universities in Japan for sixteen years
Editing EFL texts (Nikkei Publishing Inc. and Suken Publishing Co, Ltd.) and counselling publishers (Oxford University Press and Longman)
Designing curricula and teacher-training sessions at ECC Foreign Language Institute for four years. Observing teachers and providing feedback and re-training.
Hosting workshops at Keiwa College for university, high school and elementary-school English teachers in Niigata
Conducting language-learning experiments in Japanese university classes and presenting research and findings at teacher conferences
Lecturing on Western education to instructors preparing to teach Japanese in high schools in North America
